Course Title: GCSE English Language & GCSE English Literature
Why should I study English?
Every student is required to take English throughout Key Stage 4. You will study English Language and English Literature. Studying both aspects of English will equip students with the skills and knowledge considered essential for all post-16 courses as well as developing many transferrable skills useful to a wide range of careers.
What will I learn?
You will study a range of topics in English over 3 years.
English Language includes the demonstration of reading for meaning and writing skills.
- Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing.
- Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives.
- Spoken Language - presenting, responding to questions and feedback, and the use of Standard English.
English Literature includes the exploration and analysis of:
- Paper 1: Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) and the 19th-century novel (A Christmas Carol).
- Paper 2: Modern texts (An Inspector Calls) and poetry.
What will be expected of me?
You will be expected to actively participate in class work, group discussions and research. You will need to learn many key technical terms and make reference to them in answering questions. An inquisitive mind and attention to detail are good qualities in the study of Language and Literature. You will also need the commitment to write extended pieces of analytical, creative and discursive writing.
What skills will I develop?
You will develop research, listening and analytical skills. You will become confident in carrying out language analysis and explaining and presenting your findings. You will develop the ability to express yourself for a variety of purposes, with clarity, showing mastery of styles of writing appropriate for many settings, both in Post-16 Education and in a work environment. You will be able to explore the context of a piece of writing linking it to the writer’s intention.
How will I be assessed?
Students will sit 4 examination papers at the end of Year 11, 2 in each of the subjects. Each of English Language, and English Literature, will contribute 50% of the overall subject award. For English Literature, paper 1 will contribute 40% of the overall subject award. Paper 2 will contribute 60% of the overall subject award. Questions will be a mixture of closed short answer, structured, and open response.
Where will this qualification lead me?
Students completing the course will be able to undertake further study at A-Level and continue onto university or employment. The skills acquired in English apply to all careers.
