Our Pupil Voice team went to Broadstairs and St Peter’s Town Council to observe their Environment Committee meeting. Course Title: Level 2 BTEC First Award in Sport

Why should I choose to study BTEC sport?

This course provides an engaging and relevant introduction to the world of sport.

It incorporates important aspects of the industry, such as fitness testing and training for sport and exercise, practical sports performance and sports leadership. It enables you to develop and apply your knowledge, while also developing a range of relevant practical, communication and technical skills.

What will I learn?

You will cover 4 units over the 3 years of the course, including:

Fitness for Sport and Exercise: Students will learn about the components of fitness and the principles of training to improve their sporting performance. Students will then learn about the different methods of fitness training we could use to improve fitness and then will investigate the different methods of testing an athletes fitness to determine progress or a benchmark of fitness.

Practical performance in sport: This unit aims to assess the students practical ability to perform. The unit opens by the students understanding the rules, regulations and scoring systems of 2 chosen sports whilst exploring the roles of officials. The students then go onto performing in a range of sports (individual and team) and assessing their practical ability. They will then analyse this performance and assess their strengths and areas to develop.

Leading sports activities: Students learn about some of the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to be an effective sport leader. They put their knowledge into practice by planning and delivering safe and effective sporting activity sessions. Afterwards they review their performance.

Applying the principles of personal training: This unit allows the students to explore them as an athlete. The students will design a personal fitness training programme for themselves, plan and participate in this programme to try to achieve their goals or objectives and then will review and evaluate their success of this programme based on their results.

What will be expected of me?

  • Bring correct kit to every practical lesson.
  • Complete all coursework in line with deadlines given.
  • Complete assignments and homework to ensure you have a full understanding of the work.
  • Attend a minimum of one after school club a week to help boost practical scores.

What skills will I develop?

You will gain many valuable skills from studying BTEC. You will gain an improvement in skill level in a number of practical sports, as well as developing coaching and officiating roles. You will also gain skills such as working as a team, leadership and confidence. Further to this you will learn about the body and how to exercise to make the body fitter and able to perform at a better standard.

How will I be assessed?

There are four units within the course. Three of these units are assessed through coursework with one unit being assessed in an examination.

Where will this qualification lead me?

BTEC Sport will lead you onto the next stage of your education within sport. All Level 3 courses will be applicable if you achieve well on the course. Further to this, it will give you the opportunity to pursue a career in the sports industry.
