Year 8 Options Evening – Tuesday 7 March 2017 at 5pm
The Charles Dickens School is changing its curriculum offer to a compressed Key Stage 3 meaning that your child will have the opportunity to choose and start their Key Stage 4 (GCSE/BTEC) options in September 2017. This will provide students with more time to focus on these important qualifications improving their chances of success and therefore their life chances and options when they leave the School.
We would like to invite you and your son/daughter to the School on the evening of Tuesday 7 March 2017 between 5pm–6.30pm to find out more about the courses on offer as he/she progresses through Key Stage 4. Please note this evening is not to discuss your son’s/daughter’s current progress but to consider his/her choice of courses for the next three years of study. The Year 8 Parent Consultation Evening is to be held on the evening of Wednesday 18 January from 4.00pm to 7.00pm, for this purpose and you will have received information about that event separately from Mrs Schers. The students will also have a Taster Day on Wednesday March 1 to try 5 different option subjects before making their final option choice.
On the Y8 Options Evening, there will be a presentation for parents at 5pm in the Sports Hall to explain the curriculum on offer and the various pathways, including the English Baccalaureate, and the important process of helping your son/daughter to choose his/her own individual learning pathway, and the support and guidance the school will be offering over the coming months. After this, you and your son/daughter will have the opportunity to talk to staff about GCSE/BTEC courses on offer. You will also receive a Year 8 options booklet which explains the courses and learning pathways available and a programme of the evening indicating where staff will be available for discussion and advice. Please can I ask that students wear their school uniform to this event.
I will be available in the Sports Hall to provide further advice along with members of the senior team. Mr John Handley, EBP Kent, will also be available in the Canteen to offer independent careers advice.
We look forward to seeing you at this very important event. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or you are unable to attend. Please complete the reply slip below to confirm your attendance.
