Cultural Capital 2022

Posted on: 19/04/2022

Cultural capital is defined as the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a student can draw upon and which demonstrates their cultural awareness, knowledge and competence; it is one of the key ingredients a student will draw upon to be successful in society, their career and the world of work.  Once again, at the end of Term 4, CDS students had the opportunity to engage in a different kind of learning during a two days alternative timetable for cultural capital.   Students enjoyed enrichment activities removing them temporarily from the structure of normal school life and below are some of the exciting events that took place.

The School was fortunate enough to host two amazing poets from the Poet Society who worked with students encouraging thinking “outside of the box” and writing ekphrastic poetry.  Literacy champions took to the capital as a reward for their hard work during the year and watched the stage adaptation of the “Life of Pi” after enjoying some the sights that London has to offer.

Activities in classrooms ranged from ethical debating around “the trolley problem” to Harry Potter related science, while Engineering students were challenged with building spaghetti towers!  Students made Graze dishes in Hospitality and learning the traditions of Kente Cloth, the woven cloth of Ghana.

External organisations attended to offer workshops with students ranging from forensics and make up artistry to life skills sessions.

Wellbeing workshops were held for Year 8 students looking at the “5 Ways to Wellbeing” – connect; be active; play and creativity; keep learning and take notice.

It was wonderful to see CDS students enriching their knowledge, skills and education all of which have social network and cultural value.
